Designed by Albert Kahn and opened to the public in 1904. The Belle Isle Aquarium is North America's oldest continuously operating public aquarium. The aquarium is the home of 146 species, many of these are native Michigan fish.
The building itself is a one of kind. The interior is a classic example of early 20th century architecture.
Unfortunately this gem of Detroit is about to shut down, on Sunday April 3rd 2005. The City of Detroit has decided to close it after 101 years of operation, due to "financial short fall in the city budgets".
However a dedicated group of volunteers are working to bring the Belle Isle Aquarium back. |
